So I joined this “club” online which basically means I started a subscription for a service that sends me a kit every month or so to do an art project of some sort. The idea was to stir my creativity in a direction that I hadn’t touched in a while. I crochet and cross stitch, but I love to try new things.
It has been a LONG time since I did any woodworking, so I was pleasantly surprised when my first project was a bird house. Thankfully, all the pieces were already cut so all I had to do was sand, paint, glue, and assemble.
Now you might be saying to yourself, “Do I even have the tools to do a project like that?” And if you were me your answer would be, “Of course I have the right tools but they’re in the other room so I’ll just use this incorrect tool and it’ll be fine.”

Also, you might discover that I have a (shall we say minor) “problem” with paint in that the thought of applying it to a surface in a “non-artistic” way fills me with such anxiety that I have to listen to a lot of Jason Mraz to make the crying stop. While we were painting the studio, I was relegated to the waiting room whilst people who are far more adept at painting without crying completed the task. And by completed I mean 90%. We’ll discuss the bathroom at a later date.
So here is my completed birdhouse. I added shutters because:
- part of the design called for tracing around the windows
- one of the instructions was to paint inside the above tracing
- I am very bad at following directions
- it was a design choice because my home has black shutters
Photographic evidence of the aforementioned shutters!

Also… yes the roof is crooked. Do I care? Nope. I was going to care but then I remembered that it’s a decoration and it’s a representation of my own style and skill level. And for real… I’m NOT perfect. So I love my little wonky decorative bird house and I’m super excited to see what comes next!
